A ramble on the Epsom Downs

Starting Point: The mini roundabout on Tattenham Corner Road. Distance Approx 5 miles. Time Approx 1.5 hours

  1. From the mini roundabout near the Downs Lunch Box, take the signed bridleway towards Walton Road. Cross the racecourse and continue ahead on the broad lane, keeping an eye out for cars. The bridleway remains open on race days but with restrictions.
  2. The lane then swings a hard right. Follow the waymarked bridleway as it will fork off down a narrow path to the left. Bear right at the gallops, continuing beside a wooden fence. Rejoin the broader lane past the warren.
  3. When you reach the bottom of the hill, you will see a six way junction. Take the third exit straight ahead. You will follow a narrow track through the trees but you will soon reach a broader track that leads you out past wooden posts. Turn left here and in a few paces fork off to the left. Keep straight ahead at the bridleway signpost, towards Walton On The Hill. Now follow the waymarked track as it will swing right at Nohome Farm and begin the long climb out of the valley.
  4. This path ends at the Cotton Mills, at the junction of Hurst Road and Ebbisham Lane. Turn left at the bottom into Walton Street. Pass the Fox and Hounds and Mere Pond, then go left at The Bell pub sign, to the side of the pond. After about 30 yards fork right at Withybed Corner and follow the lane to The Bell.
  5. Go straight on here, along the path signposted to Motts Hill Lane. Continue past the coal post and White Cottage; then, as the lane bears right, turn left onto the bridleway. From here simply follow the waymarked route all the way back to Epsom Lane North. Cross the road and continue along the pathway towards the car park. You’ve finished!
